The South Hams

Slapton sands

The South Hams area of Devon contains some of the most unspoilt coastline on the south coast. The entire coastline, along with the lower Avon and Dart valleys, form most of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Some notable coastline features are the headlands of Start Point and Bolt Head, the sweeping Start Bay famously used as a practise landing area in preparation for D-Day, and Burgh Island which was the inspiration for some of Agatha Christie's novels, accessible by foot at low tide and by sea tractor at high tide.

This area is sheltered by the rugged hills of Dartmoor to the north and because of its southerly aspect it enjoys one of the mildest climates in mainland Britain and a wealth of wildlife and birds. It is a very rural area with quaint hamlets and villages, medieval market towns and ancient fishing ports.

Holidays in the South Hams

Sailing off the coast of South Devon

The market town of Kingsbridge is only 6 miles from our properties for a range of shops, a twice monthly Farmer's Market, a leisure centre with pool, and boat trips (in season) down the Kingsbridge estuary to Salcombe.
There is a wider range of boat trips, boat hire and sailing tuition from Salcombe.
Other local towns well worth a visit while on holiday including the sailing and harbour town of Dartmouth and market town of Totnes.

Being a coastal agricultural area also brings with it a wonderful range of local produce. As well as the local farmers markets try visiting the farm shops, speciality food stores or restaurants and pubs.

Overall this area has much to offer holidaymakers: the many sheltered estuaries offer excellent sailing; there are breathtaking coastal paths and many national trust areas; plenty of fine safe beaches and other activities for families such as steam train rides and boat trips.
