Our property, Well Cottage, is situated in the hamlet of West Buckland just ½ mile
from Bantham with it's famous beach.
Bantham Beach is South Devon's best surfing beach but is also a great for
families with plenty of both soft and firm sand. There are also many rock pools
and it is backed by sand dunes in which to explore or just relax.
It looks out over the famous Burgh Island with its art-deco hotel and at the end
of the beach lies the mouth of the Avon River and Bantham Ham. Round the Ham on
the estuary side there is still plenty of sand but it is quieter and on this part
dogs are permitted all year round. Dogs are only permitted on the main part of
Bantham beach between October and April.
Bantham lies on the winding River Avon, which remains largely unspoilt and offers
some beautiful walks. In high season when the small passenger ferry links the
Bantham and Bigbury side of the Avon it is possible to walk the banks of the river
on both sides going up to Aveton Gifford and back. On the Bigbury side there an
alfresco Bistro The Oyster Shack tucked back from the riverfront. There is the
Fisherman's Rest at Aveton Gifford and the renowned Sloop Inn back at Bantham.
Bantham also has a small village store.
The hamlet of West Buckland is very picturesque and peaceful with many thatched
cottages down narrow quiet lanes that have remained unchanged for years.
Though now a very tranquil spot, being off the main route to the beach,
in the 1700's it was bigger than Bantham and a centre for smuggling as well
as cider orchards.
West Buckland is also under a mile from Thurlestone where there is a Post Office
and General Store, The Village Inn, 18 and 9 hole golf courses with spectacular
sea views, the 4* Thurlestone Hotel and further beaches. There are many fine
footpaths between West Buckland, Bantham, and Thurlestone and along the coast
with some great views.
